Some senatorial candidates who merely relied on their famous last names, like Genuine Opposition candidate John Osmeña and outgoing Zambales Gov. Vic Magsaysay, have lost the election and been relegated to the background.
The reason for this is that the Osmeñas of Cebu are no longer in power. In fact, re-electionist Cebu City Mayor Tom Osmeña had to align himself with the Garcias of Cebu to get re-elected. In other words, the “Tatak Osmeña” which was the slogan of Sonny O, did not mean anything to the voters.
Similarly, the Magsaysay name has been forgotten. Vic Magsaysay obviously did not realize that young voters from the ages of 18 to 35 years could no longer relate to the late President Magsaysay with the “My Guy” slogan.
In contrast, the name “Aquino” clearly placed Rep. Noynoy Aquino in the Magic 12 since former President Cory Aquino has been in media and limelight after her term in 1992.
